Former England Star Bailed Over Suspected Drug-Driving and Possession Following Motorway Barrier Collision
HAMPSHIRE — Former England winger Raheem Sterling has been arrested on suspicion of drug-driving and dangerous driving after allegedly crashing his supercar into motorway barriers on Thursday morning.
The 31-year-old football star was detained by police at the scene on the M3 in Hampshire after his Lamborghini collided with the central reservations close to the Minley Interchange.
Hampshire Police confirmed that the driver, a 31-year-old man from Berkshire, was arrested on suspicion of driving a vehicle whilst unfit through drugs, dangerous driving, possession of a Class C drug, and failing to provide a specimen.
Emergency services were called to the southbound carriage just before 9:00 AM. Authorities confirmed that no other vehicles were involved in the collision and no injuries were reported.
”No Proof of Drugs”
Sterling has since been released on bail pending further enquiries. A source close to the winger confirmed the arrest to BBC Sport but vehemently maintained that there was “no proof” of drugs in his system.
The source painted a picture of a footballer in crisis, revealing that Sterling has endured an “extremely tough couple of years” professionally, during which he was made to “feel worthless” and “forgotten about” by the footballing world.
A Career in Freefall
The arrest caps off a dramatic and painful decline for one of the most decorated English players of his generation.
Sterling only recently returned from a brief and highly unsuccessful stint in the Dutch Eredivisie with Feyenoord. He joined the Rotterdam-based club in February on a short-term deal but managed just eight appearances before his contract expired at the end of the season.
His move to the Netherlands followed a messy departure from Chelsea in January, where he left by mutual consent. The Stamford Bridge club reportedly paid a massive settlement package to terminate the remaining 18 months of his contract, which was worth in excess of £300,000-per-week.
From Quadruple Winner to the Sidelines
Signed by Chelsea from Manchester City for £47.5 million in 2022, Sterling’s move to West London quickly turned into a nightmare. Despite a season-long loan spell at Arsenal designed to reignite his career, he made just 59 league appearances in four years for the Blues.
It stands as a stark contrast to his golden era at Manchester City, where he won four Premier League titles under Pep Guardiola, having initially risen to stardom with Liverpool.
Sterling boasts 82 international caps for England, though he has not featured for the national team since the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Hampshire Police have stated that investigations into the motorway collision are ongoing.
