MAHIKENG — A wave of shock and profound grief has swept through the North West province following the brutal assassination of prominent social activist and traditional healer, Thato Senganga Molosankwe.
The 43-year-old anti-crime crusader, affectionately known to locals as “Senganga,” was gunned down in the early hours of Wednesday morning at his residence in Lomanyaneng village, just outside Mahikeng.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), heavily armed unknown attackers breached Molosankwe’s property before opening fire. The activist sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported from the homestead, leading many in the community to believe the hit was a highly targeted, calculated execution.
A Fearless Voice Silenced
Molosankwe was a foundational pillar of grassroots activism in the North West. He was widely respected for his unwavering, vocal opposition to corruption, gender-based violence (GBV), child abuse, and drug syndicates.
As the founder of the Thato Molosankwe Charity Foundation, he famously dubbed himself “a father of fatherless children,” dedicating his life to supporting vulnerable youth and broken families. Over the years, Molosankwe earned national recognition for his extreme physical demonstrations for social justice, which included organizing annual long-distance awareness walks from Johannesburg to Mahikeng to combat GBV. He had even conceptualized a massive “Rounding Africa” trek from Cape Town to Cairo to protest child marriages and continental conflict.
Living at the derelict Credo Mutwa Cultural Village in Mahikeng, he utilized the historic site as a sanctuary and headquarters for his humanitarian work. Recently, Molosankwe had been vocal on social media regarding local municipal governance, illegal immigration, and had publicly lauded SAPS for their aggressive operations against regional ATM bombing syndicates.
High-Level Manhunt Launched
The audacity of the murder has reverberated straight to the highest echelons of law enforcement. The Acting National Commissioner of SAPS, Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, immediately condemned the killing and ordered North West Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Ryno Naidoo, to mobilize “maximum resources” to track down the perpetrators.
The specialized Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit has officially taken over the docket.
”Mr. Molosankwe has been described by local police as a deeply community-minded individual who played an invaluable role in assisting police efforts aimed at fighting crime and corruption,” Lt. Gen. Dimpane said in an official statement. “We assure the community that no stone will be left unturned until those responsible are brought to book.”
Outrage Over Activist Safety
While SAPS maintains that the motive for the assassination remains officially unknown, local civic organizations and residents are pointing squarely at his dangerous work as a whistleblower and crime fighter. Activists in South Africa increasingly face deadly retaliation for challenging criminal syndicates and local political corruption.
As forensic teams comb through the Lomanyaneng scene, the streets of Mahikeng remain tense, with community members demanding swift justice for a man who spent his life protecting them.
Authorities are urgently appealing to anyone with information regarding the shooting to contact the Crime Stop hotline on 08600 10111 or submit anonymous tips via the MySAPS mobile application.
