Tragedy in Delta: Bishop Bludgeoned to Death in Asaba Home

ASABA – The Delta State Police Command has uncovered a harrowing tale of betrayal following the brutal murder of Bishop Clarence Chinedu Okonkwo. The cleric was discovered bludgeoned to death in his residence in Ibusa, near the state capital, on Tuesday, May 12.

​Investigations took a sharp turn when detectives noticed the Bishop’s personal driver, Uchenna Nicholas Obiagwu, and a Toyota Land Cruiser SUV were missing from the premises. Bishop Okonkwo was known to have placed immense trust in Obiagwu, granting him unrestricted access to his private quarters—a trust authorities now believe was exploited for a lethal end.

​The Onitsha Arrest

​Acting on intelligence, the Delta State Police alerted their counterparts in neighboring Anambra State. The breakthrough came barely 24 hours later in Onitsha, where police operatives intercepted Obiagwu and his younger brother. The duo was reportedly caught in the middle of a transaction, attempting to sell the late Bishop’s Land Cruiser for ₦10 million.

​Conflicting Accounts

​During interrogation, Obiagwu offered a defense that investigators have labeled “inconsistent.” He claimed that unidentified gunmen invaded the Bishop’s home, kidnapped him, and forced him to drive the vehicle to Onitsha. According to his statement, the assailants mandated him to sell the car for ₦10 million and leave the Bishop behind.

​However, police authorities remain unconvinced. The evidence points toward a domestic conspiracy, suggesting that Obiagwu may have facilitated the invasion or participated directly in the bludgeoning of his employer.

​The Delta State Command has confirmed that both brothers remain in custody while a manhunt is underway for other suspected accomplices. “This is a case of misplaced trust turned deadly,” a police source stated. “We are committed to ensuring every individual involved in this dastardly act faces the full weight of the law.”
