NAIROBI, Kenya — In a bold departure from traditional diplomatic ties, President William Ruto and his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, yesterday opened the inaugural Africa Forward Summit at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC). The two-day event has drawn over 30 heads of state and 4,000 delegates to the Kenyan capital, signaling a definitive move away from “aid and charity” toward a partnership of “sovereign equity.”
Addressing a high-powered assembly—including UN Secretary-General António Guterres and African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf—President Ruto emphasized that the current global climate demands a “renewed multilateralism” grounded in mutual respect rather than historical hierarchies.

A Pivot Toward Investment
The summit, co-chaired by Presidents Ruto and Macron, serves as a strategic platform to overhaul the economic relationship between Africa and Europe. A key highlight was the signing of 11 bilateral agreements between Kenya and France, including a multi-million euro micro-grid plant by Schneider Electric near Mombasa and the modernization of the Nairobi Commuter Rail.
”Enduring partnerships must not be built on dependence,” President Ruto declared. “We are seeking win-win engagements centered on domestic resource mobilization, the reform of the international financial architecture, and green industrialization.”

Innovation and Youth at the Forefront
With nearly 70% of Africa’s population under the age of 35, the summit placed a heavy emphasis on youth empowerment. France’s Interior Minister, Gérald Darmanin, unveiled the “Talent Afrique–France Fast-Track” pilot program, which will grant 48-hour priority visa appointments to African tech entrepreneurs and STEM graduates.
The agenda further highlighted:
- AI-Driven Transformation: A roundtable co-chaired by Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame focused on positioning Africa as a global competitor in digital infrastructure.
- Energy Transition: Discussions on nuclear energy cooperation and the Africa Green Industrialization Initiative (AGII) aimed at scaling private financing for climate-smart projects.
- Security Council Reform: AU Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf utilized the sidelines to reaffirm Africa’s demand for two permanent seats on the UN Security Council.
Notable Attendance
The summit’s opening saw a significant gathering of African leaders, including Presidents Paul Kagame (Rwanda), Bola Ahmed Tinubu (Nigeria), Abdel Fattah el-Sisi (Egypt), and Alassane Ouattara (Côte d’Ivoire). The presence of diverse leaders from across the continent—including those from Ghana, Mozambique, Senegal, and Ethiopia—underscores a unified African front in negotiating terms for the continent’s long-term economic transformation.

As the summit concludes today, observers expect the adoption of the Nairobi Declaration, a framework intended to hold both African states and international partners accountable for concrete, measurable progress in investment and technology transfer.
