ILE-IFE – The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) community has been plunged into deep mourning following the sudden and tragic death of Adewole Emmanuel, a 400-level student in the College of Health Sciences.
The aspiring doctor reportedly collapsed on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, while waiting to sit for his final session examination. Despite immediate efforts to resuscitate him, he was confirmed dead shortly after.
A Promising Future Cut Short
The Ife University Medical Students Association (IFUMSA) confirmed the heartbreaking development in an official statement issued on Thursday. The association described Emmanuel as a “solid pillar” of his class and a “rising star” whose departure has left his colleagues in a state of shock and devastation.
”Under the cover of dark clouds, we write to you with the heaviest of hearts,” the IFUMSA statement read. “Emmanuel was a colleague, friend, roommate, and a Part 4 medical student with an undeniably bright future until the time of his passing.”
No Prior Signs of Illness
While the exact medical cause of the collapse remains unconfirmed, sources within the college revealed that Emmanuel had shown no prior symptoms of ill health. A senior member of the association, speaking on the condition of anonymity, noted that the student appeared fine until the moment he slumped.
”He hadn’t been sick,” the source told TheCable. “We were about to write our final exam. While waiting at the college, he suddenly collapsed. It is particularly painful because he had no known underlying medical condition.”
Calls for Privacy
In the wake of the incident, the student body has appealed to the public and the university community to avoid spreading unverified rumors regarding the cause of death.
”In honoring his dearest memories, we kindly ask the general public to do without speculations and respect the privacy of the family during this vulnerable period,” IFUMSA urged.
The university management has been notified, and the family of the deceased has been contacted. This incident adds to a somber year for the institution, following the loss of another medical student, Timilehin Toromade, who passed away in his sleep earlier in January.
As at the time of filing this report, the university has not issued an official briefing on funeral arrangements or further medical investigations.
