Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has called on traditional rulers across the state to embrace leadership grounded in humility, integrity, and a strong commitment to advancing good governance at the grassroots level. Speaking at an orientation workshop organized for 72 newly installed royal fathers in Abeokuta, the state capital, the governor emphasized the need to balance cultural tradition with the demands of modern governance.
Represented by his Chief of Staff, Dr. Toyin Taiwo, Governor Abiodun highlighted the pivotal role of traditional rulers as the primary custodians of justice and peace within their communities. He described royal fathers as the first responders in resolving disputes and as vital links between the government and the people, serving as moral compasses and living symbols of community values and aspirations.

“Royal fathers must lead with dignity and be exemplars of selfless and progressive leadership, working closely with government efforts to bring development to every part of Ogun State,” the governor stated.
Training to Empower New Monarchs for Contemporary Challenges
The orientation workshop, themed “Traditional Rulers: The Harbingers of Good Governance,” aimed to equip the newly installed Obas with the skills and knowledge necessary to navigate contemporary leadership challenges effectively. Ganiyu Hamzat, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, explained that the training was a key resolution from the Ogun State Council of Obas meeting earlier this year and is part of ongoing capacity-building initiatives for traditional institutions.
Dr. Rotimiolu Akinlesi, Permanent Secretary of the ministry, reinforced that beyond installations, the government is committed to continuous training to empower traditional rulers in accelerating development across the state.
Royal Fathers Recognized as Pillars of Peace and Progress
Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, lauded the state government’s efforts in organizing the leadership training, urging participants to leverage the opportunity to sharpen their leadership capabilities for the benefit of their kingdoms.
The one-day conference brought together 72 recently crowned traditional rulers, including First Class Obas, part II Obas, and coronets from the four traditional councils. The official communiqué underscored the significance of traditional rulers in promoting good governance, social order, and cultural identity, as defined by both customary law and state legislation.
The royal fathers were encouraged to lead with humility, integrity, and vision, balancing the preservation of cultural heritage with modernization to foster sustainable community development.
