Nigerian-born Margaret Obi Makes Historic Appointment as High Court Judge in England and Wales

Nigerian-born British lawyer Mrs Margaret Obi has etched her name in history books as the first African-born individual appointed as a High Court Judge in England and Wales. Her appointment, which took effect on October 3, 2025, marks a groundbreaking milestone in the British judiciary, spotlighting the growing influence and global success of Nigerian legal professionals.

Mrs Justice Obi, as she is now formally styled, brings a formidable background to this prestigious role. With over 27 years of extensive legal practice, including a reputable tenure as a criminal defence solicitor handling high-profile cases involving serious offences such as murder, manslaughter, sexual assault, and terrorism, Obi’s career exemplifies dedication and professional excellence. She has also served seven years in various senior judicial capacities, notably as a Deputy High Court Judge, Deputy Upper Tribunal Judge, and Chair of the Competition Appeal Tribunal. Her judicial versatility was further demonstrated in 2023 when she became the first Service Police Complaints Commissioner, responsible for maintaining accountability within the UK armed forces policing system, as well as Acting Judge of the Supreme Court of the British Indian Ocean Territory.

Her arrival in the King’s Bench Division of the High Court places her among the elite few judges who transitioned to this rank from a solicitor background—a rare and commendable achievement in UK legal circles. She is now one of only eight current High Court judges with such a background, and as England and Wales’ most senior Black judge, she symbolizes the strides made toward diversity and inclusion in the judiciary.

In London, the swearing-in ceremony held at the Royal Courts of Justice was attended by red-capped Nigerian Igbo chiefs, symbolizing the pride of the Nigerian community in her landmark achievement. Presiding officer Baroness Carr of Walton-on-the-Hill, the Lady Chief Justice, praised Obi’s exceptional journey and resilience, noting her “almost Jedi-like qualities” in the legal profession. The ceremony also highlighted an interesting connection as another notable figure from Tottenham, North London—David Lammy—was recently sworn in as Lord Chancellor.
