The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued a stern security advisory to American citizens in Nigeria ahead of the planned #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest set for Monday, October 20, 2025, in the Federal Capital Territory. The Embassy cautioned that while the protest is intended to be peaceful, it has the potential to lead to significant disruptions, including roadblocks, traffic congestion, and possible violent confrontations between protesters and police, particularly around Eagle Square and the Central Business District.
In its statement released on Friday, the Embassy strongly urged U.S. nationals residing in Abuja to avoid designated protest zones and to minimize movement throughout the city on the day of the demonstration. Additional precautions recommended include keeping children at home from school and having domestic workers who typically commute from outside Abuja stay off the roads to ensure their safety. The Embassy also advised all citizens to monitor local media for updates, exercise caution around unexpected crowds, and maintain a low profile throughout the day.
The protest, officially announced by activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore via social media on October 9, 2025, calls for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Kanu has been in custody since June 2021 following his controversial extradition from Kenya and currently faces terrorism-related charges before the Federal High Court in Abuja.
However, a Federal High Court in Abuja recently barred Sowore and others from holding protests near critical government landmarks such as the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, National Assembly, Force Headquarters, Court of Appeal, Eagle Square, and parts of Shehu Shagari Way, pending further court proceedings. Nigerian police have warned they will enforce this order strictly and have threatened to arrest protesters who attempt to defy the ruling and approach prohibited areas.
Despite legal restrictions and police warnings, the protest has garnered momentum, with support described by some Igbo leaders as a pan-Nigerian call demanding Kanu’s unconditional release. The situation remains fluid, with security forces on high alert and tensions expected to be high in the Federal Capital Territory.
The U.S. Embassy’s security alert serves as a critical advisory for American citizens to prioritize their safety by avoiding protest environs and limiting non-essential travel within Abuja on October 20, 2025.
