The Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources has issued an official response following the arrest of an individual cooking on a road median in the Admiralty area of Lekki Phase 1. The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC/KAI) apprehended the person for contravening environmental and sanitation regulations, despite the individual’s claim of conducting charitable cooking activities.
Commissioner for Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, expressed appreciation for philanthropy within the community but emphasized that such initiatives must strictly adhere to existing state laws to safeguard public safety, environmental health, and urban order. “The unauthorized use of public infrastructures such as road medians for commercial or personal activities poses several risks, including damage to the infrastructure, health hazards, and disruption of traffic flow,” Wahab stated.
This enforcement action aligns with the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to maintaining a clean, sustainable, and livable Lagos under the #KeepLagosClean and #ZeroToleranceLagos campaigns. The arrest included the removal of cooking equipment from the scene as part of preserving the city’s functional and aesthetic integrity.
Residents and organizations are urged to conduct charitable or commercial activities within designated spaces or acquire necessary approvals from relevant government agencies. Wahab encouraged collaboration with authorities to ensure goodwill actions are compliant and contribute positively without infringing on environmental standards.
The Lagos State Government reiterated its dedication to protecting public spaces, urging all Lagosians to play active roles in maintaining the city’s cleanliness and compliance with regulations. This measured approach helps protect shared urban environments while fostering responsible philanthropy.
This incident highlights the ongoing balancing act between community support efforts and regulatory enforcement in a rapidly urbanizing metropolis, emphasizing coordinated guidelines for charitable engagements in public spaces.
