Kenya mourned the loss of one of its most iconic political figures, Raila Amolo Odinga, who died on October 15, 2025, in Kerala, India, after suffering a cardiac arrest during medical treatment. At 80, Odinga left behind a profound legacy as the country’s Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013 and as a tireless champion of democratic values who shaped Kenya’s political landscape for over three decades.

Odinga’s career was marked by resilience; despite losing five presidential elections—contesting under different parties including the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD)—he remained a steadfast voice for reform and justice in Kenya. His 2008 appointment as Prime Minister followed a landmark power-sharing agreement that helped restore calm after the tumultuous 2007 election violence.

President William Ruto led the tributes to Odinga, calling him a “true patriot, visionary leader, and unifier of the Kenyan people.” In his heartfelt eulogy delivered during the state funeral at Nyayo Stadium, Ruto described Odinga as a “once-in-a-generation leader” whose enduring influence would guide Kenya’s destiny for generations to come.

Following a week of national mourning declared by President Ruto, Kenya held a state funeral with full military honors. Thousands gathered at airports and public venues, swelling crowds reflected the deep admiration many Kenyans held for the former Prime Minister. The funeral proceedings were relocated to accommodate surging crowds, underscoring Odinga’s widespread impact on the nation.

Beyond Kenya, tributes poured in from African leaders and international dignitaries, recognizing Odinga’s pivotal role in steering Kenya toward multiparty democracy and his relentless fight for electoral fairness. His life’s work has left an indelible mark on Kenya’s democratic evolution and political history.

Odinga’s death marks the end of an era, but his legacy as a beacon of courage and democratic perseverance continues to inspire Kenya and the greater African continent alike.
