The Osun State Police Command has arrested five operatives of the Amotekun Corps in connection with the tragic killings of several residents in Akinlalu community, Ife North Local Government Area. This development follows a detailed investigation into the September 30, 2025, violent incident sparked by the reported snatching of two pump-action rifles from Amotekun operatives by unidentified assailants.
According to a statement from the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, the Amotekun operatives retaliated by invading Akinlalu and indiscriminately firing shots. The attack left three residents—Adeagbo Kadijat (22), Oke-Ila Oyebamiji (60), and Fayomi Toheeb (19)—wounded, while three others—Ibrahim Oyebamiji (26), Sefiu Oyebamiji, and Abiola Olutayo—were fatally shot. Witnesses confirmed that the attackers were indeed members of the Amotekun Corps, and five suspects have been taken into custody with others still at large.
The community of Akinlalu is deeply shaken, with grieving families demanding justice. Local leaders, including the Alakinlalu of Akinlalu, have disputed the claim by Amotekun that the deceased were criminals, condemning the attack as an unjustified invasion resulting in innocent lives lost. The governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has ordered a full-scale government investigation and dispatched a delegation of security and government officials to the affected community to assess the situation and extend condolences to the families.
The Osun Amotekun Corps Commander, Adekunle Isaac Omoyele, who has been summoned by the police for clarification, has not honored the invitation. He recently claimed on social media that he survived an assassination attempt, a statement the police have rejected as false and an attempt to mislead the public and obstruct justice.
Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has directed the Force Intelligence Department’s Intelligence Response Team to take over the case for thorough investigation. The police have urged residents to remain calm as peace and normalcy have been restored in Akinlalu, reaffirming their commitment to maintaining order in Osun State.
This incident has heightened tensions between security agencies and the community, emphasizing the urgent need for transparent investigations and accountability to restore trust and safety in the region. The Osun government and security forces continue to work towards justice and peace for the affected families and the community at large.
