Osinbajo Reframes ‘Japa’ as a Call to Contribution, Not Escape, at Africa Business Forum

Ahead of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York City, former Nigerian Vice President Professor Yemi Osinbajo delivered a compelling message at the Africa Business Forum, hosted by the Africa Business Club at Columbia University in collaboration with Nigerians in New York.

In a rich and insightful discussion alongside Daniel Jaiyeoba, Osinbajo tackled the persistent debate on the “choice to japa” — a popular Nigerian term for migrating abroad in search of better opportunities. He urged Nigerians in the diaspora and at home to rethink this choice, framing it not as an escape from difficult circumstances but as an opportunity for meaningful contribution to Africa’s growth story.

The conversation focused on the ease of doing business in Africa and the growing responsibilities the diaspora holds in driving transformation on the continent. Osinbajo emphasized the vast opportunities awaiting those who invest their talents, resources, and vision back home, highlighting that true leadership is less about domination of the stage and more about uplifting others.

A remarkable moment occurred midway through the event when the moderator, Daniel Jaiyeoba, an accomplished photographer and creative, unexpectedly ceded the floor to Tolani Alli, Osinbajo’s Special Assistant, Personal Photographer, and Head of Content and Production.
