President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a one-year extension to the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR. Originally set to conclude on August 31, 2025, Adeniyi’s term will now run until August 31, 2026.
The Presidency announced that this extension is intended to provide continuity for ongoing reforms crucial to the modernization of the Nigeria Customs Service. Among the key initiatives to be consolidated are the National Single Window Project—aimed at streamlining trade processes—and the execution of Nigeria’s obligations under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocol.
President Tinubu commended Adeniyi’s steadfast leadership and commitment, expressing confidence that the additional year will solidify improvements in trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security. The National Single Window Project, in particular, is billed as a transformative step to reduce customs clearance times and elevate Nigeria’s standing in both regional and international commerce.
This decision comes as Nigeria intensifies its efforts to modernize customs infrastructure and integrate more deeply into the African and global trading system. The Nigeria Customs Service remains a critical player in enforcing border security and ensuring that revenue collection aligns with national economic goals.
