President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday approved the appointment of Miss Usoro Akpabio as the new Managing Director of the South South Development Commission (SSDC). The commission, established to coordinate and drive socio-economic development across the Niger Delta states, will now be led by Akpabio, whose portfolio and qualifications are still being confirmed.

Miss Usoro Akpabio’s appointment marks the second major leadership change Tinubu has overseen at the SSDC in less than two years. The commission’s mandate covers infrastructure planning, skills development and poverty alleviation in Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo and Rivers states.
Biography and Career
- Academic Credentials: Official sources have yet to release detailed records of Akpabio’s academic background. It is understood that she holds at least an undergraduate degree in a social science discipline and has completed postgraduate studies in public administration or a related field.
- Professional Experience: Prior to her SSDC nomination, Akpabio is reported to have held senior roles within the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, where she oversaw community engagement and capital projects. Observers say she played a key part in coordinating federal grants for regional empowerment programmes.
- Regional Ties: A native of Akwa Ibom State, Akpabio has been active in various non-governmental forums focused on youth entrepreneurship and women’s economic inclusion in the South-South geopolitical zone.
The presidency issued a brief statement noting that Miss Akpabio “brings a wealth of experience in regional development and stakeholder coordination” and that her tenure will begin immediately. Further details on her vision for the SSDC and her succession plan at the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs are expected to follow a formal handover ceremony next week.
This appointment underscores President Tinubu’s continued emphasis on strengthening federal agencies tasked with addressing the unique challenges of the Niger Delta, particularly around infrastructure deficits, environmental remediation and human capital development. A senior government official said Akpabio’s leadership style and her familiarity with the zone’s complex dynamics were decisive factors in her selection.
Journalists have reached out to the SSDC headquarters in Port Harcourt for Akpabio’s full curriculum vitae and statements outlining her strategic priorities. Any updates will be carried in subsequent editions.
