UNITED STATES — Hannover 96 defender Ime Okon has firmly put to rest lingering speculations surrounding his international allegiance, clarifying that his decision to represent South Africa over Nigeria was guided strictly by his heart and upbringing.
The 22-year-old center-back, born in Johannesburg to a South African mother and a Nigerian father, possesses dual citizenship. However, he is currently donning the colors of Bafana Bafana at the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Okon put on a commanding display, playing the entire 90 minutes on Thursday as South Africa secured a vital 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic in their Group A fixture to keep their knockout stage ambitions alive.
Speaking in a video clip shared on Friday by veteran Nigerian journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, the German 2. Bundesliga defender dismissed claims that he snubbed the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). Instead, he insisted that South Africa is the only home he has ever truly known.
”I don’t know what to say, but at the end of the day, I know where my heart lies,” Okon stated calmly. “I have played for South Africa in the COSAFA games and I scored. South Africa is everything to me. I don’t know anything besides South Africa. That is home.”
When pressed further on whether football administrators from Abuja had made serious attempts to court him for the Super Eagles before his competitive tie-in, the physical defender revealed that there was little to no communication from the Nigerian camp.
”No, not really,” Okon noted regarding any formal pursuit by Nigeria. “But even if they call me, South Africa is my home. That’s what I have to say.”
A Household of South African Athletes
Okon’s connection to South African sports runs deep within his immediate family. His younger brother, Udeme Okon, is a rising track star who represented South Africa and clinched a bronze medal in the 4x400m relay at the World Athletics Championships. Raised primarily by his mother in the Florida township of Roodepoort following his father’s passing during his infancy, Ime’s loyalty to his country of birth has remained unshakeable.
The towering 1.87-meter defender moved from South African Premier Soccer League outfit SuperSport United to German club Hannover 96 ahead of the 2025/2026 season on a four-year deal. Despite being omitted from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations squad, his stellar club form in Germany earned him a deserved spot in Hugo Broos’ final 26-man World Cup roster.
Contrast in Fortunes
Okon’s rising international profile with Bafana Bafana highlights a contrasting and painful reality for Nigerian football enthusiasts.
While South Africa successfully advanced from a grueling qualifying group to secure their first World Cup appearance since hosting the tournament in 2010, Nigeria’s Super Eagles failed to qualify for the global showpiece. This marks the second consecutive FIFA World Cup tournament missed by West Africa’s football powerhouse, prolonging a frustrating drought for the three-time African champions.
