In a video response, Meloni said Trump’s claims were “completely fabricated” and expressed disbelief that the US president would “invent such things about an ally.” She added firmly: “Italy and I do not beg.” Her statement came after Trump, in an interview broadcast on Italy’s La7 network, claimed Meloni had “begged” him for a photo-op during the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, France.

According to La7, Trump said he wasn’t obliged to take the photo but agreed because he “felt sorry for her,” La7 reported. The broadcaster noted that only a dubbed version of the interview is available, not the original English audio, ValidViewNetwork reports.

Her final remark appeared to reference Trump’s April interview with Italian daily Corriere della Sera, in which he criticized Meloni’s stance on the US-Israel war in Iran.
