Justice has finally been served in the tragic case of Corporal Stephen Iweh, a Nigerian soldier convicted for the murder of Christopher Enobong Jimmy in 2021. In a ruling delivered by Justice Bassey Nkanang of the Uyo High Court in Akwa Ibom State, Corporal Iweh was sentenced to death by hanging on multiple charges, including murder and armed robbery, with an additional 10-year prison term for illegal possession of firearms.

The victim, Christopher Enobong Jimmy, was a 42-year-old manager at a clearing and forwarding company based in Port Harcourt. The now-deceased man had kindly offered Corporal Iweh a lift from Trailer Park in Onne, Rivers State, to Ikot Abasi in Akwa Ibom State. The trust extended by Jimmy was tragically betrayed when the soldier shot him at Oboro Junction in Ikot Abasi, stealing the victim’s grey Toyota Matrix and valuables before fleeing the scene.
Investigations revealed that Corporal Iweh, a 39-year-old father of three from Egbu village in Imo State, illegally kept an AK-47 rifle, which he claimed to have found in Borno State in 2018. His attempt to evade justice came to an end when the military officer was tracked down and arrested at Andy Guest House in Ukanafun, Akwa Ibom State, where the firearm was recovered.

The victims’ widow, 34-year-old Arit, tearfully recounted her husband’s last journey, explaining that he had left Port Harcourt intending to visit his sister and other family members in Ikot Abasi but never returned. The family has been vocal in demanding justice, with Christopher’s brother expressing deep sorrow over the loss and calling on the Federal Government and Nigerian Army to ensure the perpetrator is held accountable, so that other Nigerians continue to offer help without fear of reprisal.
The case, which attracted significant attention due to the brutal nature of the crime and the betrayal by a soldier supposed to protect citizens, marks a significant judicial victory against violence and abuse of power within security forces in Nigeria.

Justice Nkanang’s verdict sends a strong message that no one is above the law, bringing closure to the grieving family of Christopher Enobong Jimmy and reinforcing public trust in the judicial system’s capacity to hold perpetrators accountable, regardless of their position or rank.
