Two Siblings Die in Ondo Fire, Police Begin Investigation

The Ondo State Police Command has commenced an investigation into a tragic fire incident that claimed the lives of two young children in Ode-Aye, Okitipupa Local Government Area.

The incident, which occurred on March 18, 2026, at No. 1 Olaribigbe Street, Zion Area, reportedly led to the deaths of Queen Ohwo, aged six, and Everlyne Ohwo, aged four, both daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Ohwo Peter.

Confirming the development, the Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, said officers promptly visited the scene, where photographs were taken and necessary documentation carried out. The remains of the victims were subsequently evacuated to a health centre in Ode-Aye.

According to the police, the parents of the deceased were present during the incident and were found to be in deep shock.

Preliminary findings suggest that the fire may have been caused by negligence during cooking activities. However, the police command has ordered a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause and circumstances surrounding the outbreak.

The Divisional Police Officer in Ode-Aye has been directed to secure the scene, obtain statements from witnesses, and collaborate with the Federal Fire Service to ascertain the origin and extent of the fire.

The command commiserated with the bereaved family and urged residents to exercise caution when handling cooking appliances and other fire sources to prevent similar incidents.

It also advised members of the public to avoid leaving cooking unattended, keep flammable materials away from open flames, ensure children are not left alone around heat sources, and maintain basic fire safety tools at home.

The police reiterated their commitment to safeguarding lives and property while encouraging residents to remain safety-conscious at all times.

The Commissioner of Police further expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for his continued support and leadership, noting that his guidance has helped strengthen the morale and effectiveness of officers within the command.
