Peter Rufai, the former first-choice goalkeeper of the Nigerian Super Eagles and one of the nation’s most celebrated football icons, has died at the age of 61. He passed away on Thursday morning after a prolonged illness, according to Radio Nigeria and multiple confirmed reports.
Fondly known as “Dodomayana”, Rufai was widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers Nigeria has ever produced. Born on August 24, 1963, he was the son of a Lagos traditional ruler, a heritage reflected in his regal nickname.
Rufai’s professional career spanned two decades, during which he played for clubs across Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain. His club career included stints with Stationery Stores in Nigeria, AS Dragons in Benin, Lokeren and Beveren in Belgium, Go Ahead Eagles in the Netherlands, and S.C. Farense in Portugal, among others.

Internationally, Rufai earned over 60 caps for Nigeria and was a key figure in the golden era of Nigerian football. He represented the Super Eagles at two FIFA World Cups (USA 1994 and France 1998) and was instrumental in Nigeria’s 1994 Africa Cup of Nations victory. Known for his leadership, agility, and charisma, Rufai was a towering presence between the posts and captained the national team during his tenure.
His death coincides with another tragic loss in the football world, as Liverpool forward Diogo Jota died earlier on the same day in a car crash in Spain, alongside his brother.
