Representative Oye Owolewa of Washington, D.C., has called on Congress to launch an impeachment inquiry into former President Donald Trump following his unilateral missile strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites last weekend. Owolewa condemned the attack as an “unconstitutional act of war” carried out without Congressional approval, urging lawmakers to hold Trump accountable for bypassing the legislative branch in matters of war.

In a statement, Owolewa criticized the Trump administration’s priorities, highlighting the contradiction between the refusal to fund initiatives like free college education and student loan forgiveness, while authorizing costly military action. He accused Trump of serving the military-industrial complex and risking escalation toward a broader conflict instead of investing in American lives.
The missile strikes targeted Iran’s Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan nuclear facilities, which Trump claimed to have “completely and totally obliterated.” However, intelligence intercepted from Iranian officials suggests the damage was less severe than initially claimed. The attacks have sparked bipartisan backlash, with prominent Democrats including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar also calling for impeachment proceedings, citing violations of the War Powers Act and the Constitution.

Owolewa’s call reflects growing concern over executive overreach and the dangers of escalating tensions in the Middle East without Congressional consent. The debate continues amid fears of a protracted conflict and the broader implications for U.S. foreign policy and domestic priorities.
