Accra, Ghana – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Ghana today for a landmark two-day official visit, marking the first time an Indian Prime Minister has visited the West African nation in over three decades. The historic trip, which began on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, underscores a renewed focus on strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between the two vibrant democracies.
Prime Minister Modi received a grand ceremonial welcome upon his arrival, including a Guard of Honour and a resounding 21-gun salute. Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama personally greeted Modi at the airport, a gesture described as reflective of the strong and enduring friendship between the nations. Enthusiastic children, some in traditional Indian attire, greeted the Indian leader with Sanskrit shlokas, and members of Ghana’s Indian community gathered to express their excitement.
Discussions between Prime Minister Modi and President Mahama are set to encompass a wide array of sectors. The visit aims to enhance bilateral cooperation in trade, technology, infrastructure, development partnerships, capacity building, and cultural exchange. Both leaders are expected to delve into opportunities for deepening economic collaboration, with a focus on areas such as agriculture, defense, energy, health, and digital infrastructure. India currently stands as Ghana’s top export destination, primarily driven by significant gold imports, with bilateral trade reaching $3.1 billion in the 2024-2025 fiscal year.

Beyond bilateral talks, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to address the Ghanaian Parliament, further highlighting shared democratic values. He will also engage with members of the nearly 15,000-strong Indian diaspora in Ghana. In a notable recognition of the strong ties, Prime Minister Modi is also expected to be conferred with Ghana’s highest state honor, the Companion of the Order of the Star.

Ghana is the inaugural stop on Prime Minister Modi’s five-nation tour, which will also take him to Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil (for the BRICS summit), and Namibia, reinforcing India’s commitment to strengthening its engagement with the Global South and expanding its presence across Africa, the Caribbean, and South America.
