NEW YORK — In a sudden courtroom turnaround, Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty in federal court to stalking charges linked to the December 2024 assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
Standing before U.S. District Judge Margaret M. Garnett in Manhattan, the 28-year-old defendant openly confessed to his direct role in the high-profile Midtown shooting.
”On the morning of December 4, I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan and he died,” Mangione told the court. He further acknowledged that he understood his actions were illegal and that he tracked the executive using a customized 3D-printed firearm equipped with a silencer.
The unexpected admission immediately reshaped the multi-jurisdictional legal battle. Federal prosecutors confirmed they will aggressively pursue a maximum sentence of life imprisonment without parole during the scheduled December 18 sentencing hearing.
Emphasizing the strict boundaries of justice amid widespread public fascination and online commentary surrounding the case, U.S. Attorney Jamie McDonald firmly stated during a briefing, “There can be no celebrity in assassination.”
Defense attorneys swiftly leveraged the federal development in state courts. Lead defense counsel Karen Friedman Agnifilo filed an immediate motion to dismiss separate state-level murder charges, arguing that New York’s robust double jeopardy protections bar prosecutors from trying Mangione twice for the same underlying conduct. State prosecutors, however, are expected to heavily contest the dismissal as the September state trial date approaches.
