ACCRA — In a robust move to reinforce national health security and border surveillance, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has announced a mandatory policy requiring all incoming international passengers to complete and submit an online health declaration form.
The new directive, signed by the Director-General of the GHS, Dr. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, takes effect on Thursday, November 12, 2026. It applies universally to all travellers heading to the West African nation, regardless of their port of origin or mode of transport.
Enhancing Regional Surveillance
According to the official statement released by health authorities, the electronic health declaration requirement is designed to significantly fortify Ghana’s public health preparedness systems. By capturing vital travel and health data prior to arrival, authorities aim to improve the early detection and tracking of potential infectious disease risks, safeguarding both residents and visitors.
The policy aligns with heightened regional monitoring measures following recent public health concerns across the continent, including the spread of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola in nations such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, alongside reported imported cases in countries like Kenya and Nigeria. While Ghanaian health officials emphasize a proactive stance on general epidemiological surveillance, international health bodies continue to monitor regional movements closely.
Directives for Passengers and Stakeholders
To ensure a seamless transition and prevent border delays, the GHS has outlined key compliance protocols:
- Online Submission: Prospective travellers must access the official GHS electronic health declaration portal to complete and submit their forms prior to departure.
- Stakeholder Collaboration: Airlines, travel agencies, and tour operators have been officially notified and instructed to actively inform passengers of the prerequisite before issuing boarding passes or finalizing travel itineraries.
- Pre-Departure Compliance: Passengers are strongly urged to finish the declaration process well ahead of their flights to avoid disruptions at entry ports.
Health authorities have reiterated that full cooperation from the travelling public and aviation stakeholders is crucial to maintaining Ghana’s strong health safety record and ensuring that cross-border travel remains both secure and efficient.
