KRAKÓW — A tranquil Saturday afternoon in one of Europe’s most celebrated medieval plazas turned into a scene of unimaginable carnage when a heavily armed gunman opened fire on crowds in Kraków’s Main Market Square.

The attack, which unfolded shortly after 3:00 p.m. on November 7, 2026, left a total of nine people dead—including three victims later discovered at the suspect’s home—and 15 others wounded. Prime Minister Donald Tusk has classified the mass shooting as an act of terrorism, plunging the nation into a profound state of shock and grief.

Minutes of Terror on the Cobblestones

The violence erupted when a 24-year-old Polish citizen, identified by authorities as military cadet Michał O., drove a vehicle directly into the pedestrian-only historic square. Clad in military-style fatigues and a bulletproof vest, the masked assailant wielded an AR-15 type semi-automatic rifle, firing indiscriminately at tourists, families, and street performers.

Panic swept through the crowded plaza as hundreds scrambled for shelter behind market stalls, café terraces, and historic doorways.

Police forces arrived within minutes, engaging the shooter in a fierce exchange of gunfire. The gunman was shot and wounded during the shootout before being successfully detained and taken to a hospital in critical condition. A search of his vehicle revealed an extensive cache of additional firearms and ammunition.

A Grim Discovery 200 Kilometers Away

While emergency responders tended to the wounded on the square—where six people lost their lives, including four women and two men (comprising three Polish citizens, a British national, and two as-yet-unidentified individuals)—the horror expanded far beyond Kraków.

Later that evening, law enforcement executed a search warrant at the suspect’s residence in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski, roughly 200 kilometers away. Inside the home, officers uncovered three additional bodies: two women and one man. Prime Minister Tusk noted that strong preliminary evidence indicates the victims were members of the gunman’s immediate family, pushing the total potential death toll to nine.

Motivations and National Grief

Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński stated that preliminary findings point to a lone actor radicalized by far-right, ultra-nationalist ideologies. Although the suspect held a legal firearms license and possessed no prior criminal record, investigators are examining how radicalization drove him to execute one of modern Poland’s deadliest mass casualty events.

In response to the tragedy, national leadership has acted swiftly:

  • National Mourning: President Karol Nawrocki announced national mourning for November 8 and 9.
  • City Mourning: Kraków Mayor Łukasz Gibała declared city mourning extending through November 11.
  • Community Resilience: Local leaders have vowed that the historic square—a timeless symbol of Polish culture and community—will not be surrendered to hate.

”The square will belong to us again,” Mayor Gibała affirmed in a public address. As Poland lights candles and mourns its dead, a scarred city begins the long path toward healing.
