The Federal Government has channeled N2.1 billion into the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife, Osun State, aimed at resuscitating its moribund renal replacement programme.
The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the institution, Prof. John Okeniyi, made the disclosure during the grand finale of the hospital’s golden jubilee (50th anniversary) celebration held within the complex in Ile-Ife.
According to Prof. Okeniyi, the intervention is a crucial component of President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” targeted at revitalizing the nation’s public health infrastructure and expanding access to specialized medical care. Expressing optimism over the funding, the CMD noted that the injection of resources will restore advanced kidney care services and alleviate the financial and physical burdens confronting renal patients.
“I would also like to thank President Bola Tinubu because we have up to N2.1 billion appropriated for our renal programme. By the time we do this and get the money, I believe the renal replacement programme will be fully back. That is part of the Renewed Hope Agenda,” Okeniyi stated.
The milestone event also drew prominent stakeholders who underscored the need for continuous investments in public health. A former Deputy Governor of Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore, stressed that robust healthcare is foundational to human existence, calling on public and private players to back life-saving medical interventions.
Echoing similar sentiments, Mr. Seyi Tinubu—represented by the Chairman of the Tinubu/Shettima Grassroots Mobilisation, Lawal Umar—noted that the true benchmark of healthcare success lies in practical accessibility rather than structural aesthetics.
”Health achievement should not be judged by policies and buildings, but by whether ordinary Nigerians can access care, afford medicines and recover,” he remarked.
The 50th-anniversary celebration also featured the conferment of recognition awards on several distinguished Nigerians for their immense contributions to the growth and development of the teaching hospital.
