Political economist and public affairs commentator, Professor Pat Utomi, has challenged Nigerians living abroad who defend the administration of President Bola Tinubu despite the economic hardship and deteriorating conditions in the country, asking why their own families are not back home enjoying what they portray as the government’s achievements.
The challenge was issued in a post on his X account on Sunday, ValidViewNetwork reports.
THE QUESTION
Utomi did not mince words. “To Nigerians in the diaspora who defend the corruption, hardship and decay Nigerians are being forced to endure under this government, I have just one question,” he wrote.
“If Tinubu’s administration is truly as ‘wonderful’ as you claim, why isn’t your family back home enjoying the benefits of this ‘beautiful’ government?”
He further questioned why Nigerians at home should be expected to endure conditions that those defending the government from abroad would not want their own families to experience.
“Why should Nigerians at home endure what those defending the government from abroad wouldn’t want their own families to experience?” he asked .
THE BROADER CRITIQUE
Utomi has been a consistent critic of the Tinubu administration, particularly its economic policies. In a previous post, he questioned why Nigerians continue to defend a government that has made life miserable for them.
“I find it sad to see Nigerians defend this APC government on a daily basis when all it has done is to continuously make life miserable for them,” he said.
He argued that tribal, religious, and political affiliations were blinding citizens to the failures of their leaders.
“People who are suffering because of a government’s policies are the same people defending the government responsible for their suffering. What kind of tragedy is this?” he asked.
WHY IT MATTERS
Utomi’s challenge strikes at the heart of a contradiction that defines Nigeria’s political discourse.
Many of the most vocal defenders of the Tinubu administration live abroad. They praise the government’s reforms, celebrate its infrastructure projects, and dismiss criticisms of its economic policies.
But their own families are often abroad too, in the UK, the US, Canada, or elsewhere, enjoying the stability and opportunity that Nigeria no longer offers.

Utomi is asking a simple question: if the government is so good, why are you not bringing your family home to enjoy it?
The question is uncomfortable. But it is one that every diaspora defender of the administration will have to answer. ValidViewNetwork reports.
