The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency disclosed the incident in a statement by its Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu.
He said the agency’s Dolphin Response Team, stationed at Igando, was immediately activated following a distress call .
“Upon arrival, responders discovered that the fire had engulfed a mechanical workshop where several exotic vehicles were parked close to a petroleum filling station. Through the prompt, professional and coordinated intervention of the LASEMA Response Team and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, supported by the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps and the Nigeria Police Force, the inferno was prevented from spreading to the filling station and surrounding structures, thereby averting what could have been a major disaster,” he said.
THE AFTERMATH
“The fire has been completely extinguished, and damping-down operations concluded. Preliminary assessment indicates that about twenty-one (21) exotic vehicles were affected, with a section of a nearby building sustaining minor damage,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.
He confirmed that no lives were lost and no injuries were recorded. He commended the emergency responders for their swift action, which he said helped bring the situation under control and avert a possible disaster.
THE WARNING
Oke-Osanyintolu urged residents to prioritise safety measures, particularly in workshops and other environments where inflammable materials are handled.
He also advised members of the public to promptly alert emergency services by calling the toll-free numbers 767 and 112 in the event of an emergency .
WHY IT MATTERS
The fire could have been catastrophic. A mechanic workshop, packed with vehicles, sitting beside a petrol station. If the flames had reached the filling station, the consequences would have been devastating.
The emergency responders acted swiftly.
LASEMA, the Fire Service, the Neighbourhood Safety Corps, and the Police coordinated to contain the blaze. No one died. No one was injured. But 21 vehicles were destroyed.
For their owners, the loss is significant. And for the workshop owner, the question of what caused the fire remains unanswered.
The investigation continues. But for now, Lagos can breathe a sigh of relief. ValidViewNetwork reports.
