LAGOS — The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has stepped up its anti-corruption campaign, bringing one Abraham Idowu Abiara before the Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja over an alleged multi-thousand-dollar fraud.
Abiara was arraigned on Tuesday before Justice Ismail Ijelu by the Lagos Zonal Directorate of the commission on a one-count charge bordering on stealing and the dishonest conversion of funds, running into hundreds of thousands of United States dollars.
According to the charge sheet presented by the anti-graft agency, the defendant allegedly committed the offense on or about September 2, 2015, within the Lagos judicial division. He is accused of dishonestly converting to his personal use the aggregate sum of $626,282—an offense that runs contrary to Section 280(2) and is punishable under Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
When the charge was read and interpreted to the defendant in court, he pleaded “not guilty.”
Following his plea, the prosecution counsel, C.C. Okezie, urged the court to issue an order remanding the defendant to a correctional facility while requesting a suitable date for the commencement of trial.
However, defense counsel sought time to present applications on behalf of their client.
In his ruling, Justice Ijelu granted a brief adjournment, fixing October 26, 2026, for the formal hearing of the defendant’s bail application and the commencement of full trial proceedings. In the interim, the defendant is expected to remain in custody pending the consideration of his bail conditions.
