US-Ukraine Rift Deepens After Massive Drone Strike on St. Petersburg

Trump Rebukes Zelensky as Ukraine Defies Energy Strike Ban

A widening diplomatic chasm has erupted between Washington and Kyiv following a massive Ukrainian drone assault on strategic energy infrastructure inside Russia. US President Donald Trump sharply criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, accusing him of resisting peace efforts after long-range Ukrainian drones targeted critical oil facilities in Saint Petersburg.

The escalation follows the White House’s controversial decision to issue a waiver halting the implementation of heavy congressional economic sanctions against Moscow. Writing on social media platform Truth Social, Trump expressed frustration that deep-territory strikes risk undermining delicate peace negotiations. He cautioned against actions that might drive Russia away from the bargaining table, maintaining that Kyiv’s military strategy is impeding a swift resolution to the multi-year conflict.

Sanctions Waiver Triggers Scathing Retort

The friction intensified after the administration invoked executive powers to pause sweeping restrictions targeting Russian and energy commerce. Appearing on national television, Zelensky fired back, warning that easing economic pressure ultimately fuels Moscow’s war machine. He characterized potential alignment or policy pivots toward the Kremlin as a “historic mistake” for Washington.

”America should see that Russia is not taking any reciprocal steps in response to sanctions relief or agreements,” Zelensky stated, arguing that the Kremlin views financial concessions as proof that its strategy of attrition is succeeding.

High-Altitude Destruction Over the Baltic

The diplomatic fallout coincided with an intense wave of aerial combat. Over the weekend, Ukrainian forces launched a swarm of long-range unmanned aerial systems targeting the Saint Petersburg Oil Terminal—a primary Baltic export hub handling upwards of 12 million tons annually—triggering severe fires across multiple logistics nodes and industrial zones. Regional authorities reported widespread power outages affecting tens of thousands of residents, while the Russian Defense Ministry claimed intercepting over a thousand drones across multiple regions.

Simultaneously, heavy retaliatory bombardments hit Ukrainian energy grids, leaving hundreds of thousands without electricity. Kyiv officials maintained that Moscow continues to violate informal energy de-escalation understandings, launching persistent waves of missiles and loitering munitions against civilian infrastructure.

Channels Remain Open Amid Turbulence

Despite the public sparring, communication channels between Kyiv and the White House remain active. Zelensky confirmed ongoing dialogues with U.S. presidential envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to map out potential diplomatic frameworks, asserting that Kyiv remains firmly dedicated to achieving a durable and secure peace. Meanwhile, international diplomatic circles have acknowledged preliminary discussions exploring a possible high-level trilateral summit involving Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
