Donald Trump suggested renaming the Strait of Hormuz the “Trump Strait” on Wednesday, claiming U.S. control over the vital waterway even as fighting with Iran raged — only to later dismiss the idea as “just thrown out there.”
A Name Change Amid War
U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested renaming the Strait of Hormuz the “Trump Strait,” reasserting that the waterway is under Washington’s control despite near-daily Iranian attacks on ships in the area.
“Now that we have it under USA control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT???” Trump wrote in a post on his Truth Social platform.
“Like America itself, it would be ‘hotter’ than ever before!”
The White House later posted a map of the Gulf on social media displaying Trump’s proposed name, adding: “It’s got a nice ring to it”.
A Proposal Walked Back
Hours after floating the idea, Trump appeared to indicate that the proposal was not necessarily serious. When asked on Wednesday afternoon whether he really intended to rename the Strait of Hormuz after himself, Trump said:
“No, no … it was just thrown out there”.
A Pattern of Geographical Renaming
The proposal is the latest in a series of geographical name changes floated by Trump during his second term.
Just a week earlier, he signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America” amid escalating tensions with Canada over tariff disputes. He also renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” on his first day back in office in January 2025.
Neither Mexico nor Canada has accepted the changes.
Conflict Enters Seventh Month
Trump’s suggestion came less than 24 hours after the U.S. struck several targets in Iran, killing at least four people, including two children, at a wedding in the southern city of Sirik.
Iran responded with missile launches against U.S. bases in the region.
When Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu started the conflict by attacking Iran earlier this year, the U.S. president promised that the war would last for six weeks.
But the promised quick end to what Trump initially dubbed a “little excursion” never materialised.
The conflict entered its seventh month last week.
Oil Prices Rise
The fighting pushed oil prices upwards by around 4 per cent.
In the U.S., the price of petrol reached $4.12 per gallon on Wednesday, up from less than $3 before the war started on February 28.
Despite repeated claims by U.S. officials that the Strait of Hormuz is now open and millions of barrels of oil are transiting through it daily, oil prices have not fallen in recent weeks.
Iran continues to maintain that the waterway is closed and under its control.
A Lesson for Nigerian Youths
This episode offers a powerful lesson for Nigerians, especially the young. A world leader, in the midst of a deadly war, is preoccupied with renaming a strategic waterway after himself, a move that many view as a distraction from the real human cost of conflict.
For Nigerian youths, the lesson is clear: do not be distracted by the theatrics of power. The same politicians who engage in grand gestures and self-aggrandisement will never allow their own children to suffer the consequences of their actions.
