North Bears Brunt as Nigeria Records 500 Security Incidents in August — Eons Intelligence Report

Zamfara, Niger, Kano and Sokoto recorded the highest number of incidents, while Kano registered a staggering 940 per cent rise in violent insecurity over five years.

The North accounted for 334 incidents, 67 per cent of the national total as experts warn against relying solely on reactive military responses.

A Nation Under Siege

Nigeria recorded 500 security incidents across the country between July 27 and August 31, 2026, with the North accounting for 334, or 67 per cent, according to the latest Nigeria Security Index by Eons Intelligence.

The report showed that Zamfara, Niger, Kano and Sokoto recorded the highest number of security incidents during the month. Kano recorded a staggering 940 per cent rise in violent insecurity in five years. Borno remains Nigeria’s deadliest conflict environment.

The Nature of the Incidents

The report recorded 86 armed attacks, 46 kidnapping incidents, 55 cult-related incidents, 18 protests and 295 other security-related incidents nationwide during the period.

While the North recorded 334 incidents, the South accounted for 166 incidents, or 33 per cent. Weekly incidents peaked at 144 in Week 33.

State-by-State Breakdown

ValidViewNetwork gathered that Zamfara recorded the highest number of incidents with 45, followed by Niger with 41, Lagos 38, Sokoto 37 and Borno 28.

Other states with high incident figures were Plateau with 24, Delta 22, Osun 21, Kaduna 20 and Oyo 18.

Key Security Developments in August

The Eons Intelligence report highlighted several major security developments during the period:

· More than 40 deaths and over 100 abductions in Borgu, Niger State
· 23 deaths in Mangu, Plateau State
· More than 50 deaths in a boat mishap in Sokoto State
· Increased kidnapping activities in Zamfara, Kebbi and Sokoto
· Persistent IED threats in Zamfara and Borno
· School closures in Gwadabawa, Sokoto State
· Election-related violence in Osun State

The report assessed the North as the epicentre of lethal violence, while political and cult-related threats remained significant security concerns in parts of southern Nigeria.

A Broader Context of Escalating Insecurity

The findings came amid a separate five-year analysis by the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED) , analysed and visualised by Semafor, which showed significant shifts in the geographical pattern of violent insecurity across Nigeria.

ValidViewNetwork notes that the combination of the findings is particularly significant in Kano, which recorded 38 incidents in August while also registering a 940 per cent increase in violent insecurity over the five years.

The latest figures come as the Federal Government faces renewed pressure over the country’s worsening security situation, particularly the spread of kidnapping and armed attacks across parts of the North.

The Mass Abduction That Shook the Nation

Despite a significant rescue operation in which security forces rescued 308 kidnapped victims in Niger and Kwara states, described by President Tinubu as the largest same-day rescue operation by a joint security team, the respite was short-lived.

A mass abduction in Niger State involving hundreds of worshippers again exposed the scale of the challenge confronting security agencies. About 600 people were abducted from a mosque, while at least 30 people were killed in the attack.

President Tinubu subsequently ordered a rescue operation involving the military and other security agencies.

The Growing Kidnapping Economy

ValidViewNetwork gathered that the development has intensified concerns over the growing strength of kidnapping networks operating across the North-West and North-Central regions, where criminal groups have increasingly exploited vast forests and difficult terrain to launch attacks and hold victims for ransom.

A recent report by SBM Intelligence found that 7,825 people were abducted in Nigeria between July 2025 and June 2026, representing a 66 per cent increase from the previous year, while kidnappers collected an estimated $5.8 million in ransom payments during the period.

The report further showed that kidnapping has increasingly become an organised criminal economy, with its effects extending beyond the immediate victims to education, agriculture, livelihoods and public confidence in the ability of the state to protect citizens.

Experts Call for Shift in Strategy

Secretary-General of the Africa Centre for Strategic Studies (ACSS), Nigeria Chapter, Suleiman Mande, said the worsening security crisis, particularly in the North, stemmed from interconnected socio-economic, political, environmental and governance challenges.

“We therefore begin to look beyond a purely reactive military approach and address the underlying conditions that continue to reproduce insecurity such as poverty, unemployment, weak institutions, poor governance, environmental pressures, porous borders, proliferation of criminal networks and the absence of effective state presence in vulnerable communities,” Mande said.

He warned: “As we approach the 2027 elections, this situation should be a major concern. Security must not become another political instrument for intimidation, harassment or suppression of citizens.”

A Sobering Reality for Northern Communities

This report is a stark reminder that for millions of Nigerians in the North, insecurity is not a statistic, it is a daily reality.

From the farmers in Zamfara who cannot tend their fields for fear of bandits, to the children in Borno who have never known a day without the threat of violence, to the worshippers in Niger who were abducted while praying, the human cost of this crisis is immeasurable.

For the young people of Northern Nigeria, the situation is particularly dire. With schools closed, economies disrupted, and communities fractured, the future can seem uncertain. Yet, in the face of this adversity, there is a choice to be made: to succumb to despair, or to rise above it and build a future that transcends the violence.

The same politicians who speak of security while recruiting young people for thuggery and violence will never allow their own children to bear the burden of their ambitions. The children of the elite are safely tucked away in universities abroad or in comfortable homes far from the frontlines of conflict. It is the children of the poor who are used as cannon fodder.

Choose education over violence. Choose legitimate work over crime. Choose community over division. And never allow yourself to be used as a tool for someone else’s ambition.
