ENUGU — A young man once celebrated as the best graduating student in the history of the Federal College of Agriculture, Isiagu, has died in a motorcycle accident, years after the same institution that honoured his academic brilliance repeatedly failed to offer him employment.

The young man has not been formally named in public reporting as of this story, and ValidViewNetwork could not independently verify every detail beyond what was shared by writer Obinna Udenwe, who first brought the story to public attention; the account is presented here as relayed, pending further confirmation.

A record that stood for years

According to Udenwe’s account, shared online this week, the young man graduated from the Federal College of Agriculture, Isiagu, in 2015 as not merely the best student in his own set but the best graduating student the institution had produced across six consecutive convocations, a distinction significant enough that the school specially recognised him again six years after his own graduation.

Findings by ValidViewNetwork show Udenwe learned of the story from his cousin, describing it as troubling news that “makes the ear bleed.”

A job that never came

Despite that record, checks by ValidViewNetwork show the young man applied to become a lecturer at the very institution that had celebrated his academic performance, only to be turned down.

According to Udenwe, years of subsequent job-hunting yielded nothing, eventually pushing him to purchase a motorcycle to work as an okada rider simply to get by financially.

It was on that motorcycle that he was killed in the accident that ended his life.

A story that struck a national nerve

Udenwe’s account, framed as a direct challenge to Nigeria’s reward system, argued that institutions which fail to retain their brightest graduates end up filling roles instead with “lecturers who cannot solve simple problems and equations, every single year,” while the country’s best minds are left to “drive okada and run PoS businesses or loiter the streets.”

He contrasted this with what he described as practices in more developed countries, where private companies and government institutions monitor promising students early with a view to recruiting them immediately after graduation.

A pattern many Nigerians recognised

The story’s rapid spread reflects a grievance that resonates widely across Nigeria, where graduate unemployment and underemployment remain persistent despite record numbers of tertiary graduates each year.

Whether the Federal College of Agriculture, Isiagu, responds publicly to the account, or whether further details about the circumstances of the accident emerge, the story has already reignited a familiar, painful conversation about what happens to Nigeria’s most talented graduates when the systems meant to reward merit fail to do so.

If this story is even half accurate, it says less about one young man’s misfortune than about a country still comfortable handing its sharpest minds a certificate and a handshake instead of a future. Nigeria will keep losing people like him, quietly, on okadas and in PoS kiosks, until merit is followed by opportunity rather than applause.
