​GPS Pioneer and Mathematician Dr. Gladys West Dies at 95

​Dr. Gladys West, the pioneering mathematician whose foundational work in satellite geodesy and Earth modeling made modern GPS technology possible, has died at the age of 95.

​Born in Sutherland, Virginia, in 1930, Dr. West overcame the barriers of Jim Crow segregation and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mathematics from Virginia State University. In 1956, she began a 42-year career at the Naval Proving Ground in Dahlgren, Virginia (later the Naval Surface Warfare Center), where she was one of only a handful of Black employees.

​During her tenure, Dr. West programmed large-scale computers and analyzed satellite altimeter data. Her meticulous research into modeling the Earth’s geoid—accounting for gravitational, tidal, and rotational distortions—provided the critical mathematical framework required for precise satellite-based positioning. Her 1986 technical report detailing data processing specifications for satellite radar altimetry became a cornerstone for the development of the Global Positioning System (GPS).

​Though her vital contributions remained largely classified and unrecognized outside of specialized circles for decades—earning her comparisons to the “hidden figures” of aerospace history—she was inducted into the United States Air Force Hall of Fame in 2018. Dr. West’s monumental calculations continue to underpin global navigation, mapping, and geospatial technologies relied upon daily across the world.
