Lanre Ogundipe Mourns Dotun Oladipo, Says “The Bird Has Flown, The Feather Remains”

The Nigerian journalism community has been plunged into grief following the death of veteran journalist and founder of The Eagle Online, Dotun Oladipo, whose passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from colleagues and friends who encountered his work and witnessed his contribution to the evolution of Nigerian journalism.

Among those mourning the respected journalist is Mr Lanre Ogundipe, former President, of the Nigeria Union of Journalists and African Union of Journalists, who has described Oladipo’s death as a deeply shocking departure that has left him struggling to comprehend the sudden silence of a familiar voice.

In a moving tribute titled “DOTUN OLADIPO: THE BIRD HAS FLOWN, THE FEATHER REMAINS,” Ogundipe expressed profound sadness over the journalist’s death while reflecting on his professional journey, his contribution to Nigerian journalism and the enduring legacy he has left behind.

“What a nightmare! What an unbelievable night,” Ogundipe began.

“There are departures that leave sorrow, and there are those that leave the mind stunned, struggling to understand how a familiar voice could suddenly fall silent. That was the feeling when the news of Dotun Oladipo’s passing reached me. I was shocked, deeply saddened and, for a while, simply unable to comprehend it. Death, indeed, is cruel.”

Oladipo was a distinguished figure in Nigeria’s journalism landscape whose career spanned both the traditional newsroom and the rapidly developing digital media environment.

Ogundipe described him as “a distinguished member of the Nigerian journalism fraternity whose professional journey traversed the old newsroom and the emerging digital frontier.”

According to him, Oladipo’s transition from established news organisations to founding The Eagle Online demonstrated the resilience of a journalist who understood the necessity for the profession to evolve while remaining anchored to its fundamental principles.

“From his years in established news organisations to founding The Eagle Online, he demonstrated the resilience of a journalist who understood that the profession must continually reinvent itself without losing its essential values,” Ogundipe said.

Beyond establishing a media organisation, Oladipo played a significant role in the development of Nigeria’s online publishing industry.

Ogundipe noted that as a former President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers, Oladipo belonged to the generation of media professionals who helped bring greater structure, voice and professional identity to Nigeria’s rapidly expanding online media sector.

“His contribution went beyond publishing a newspaper. As a former president of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers, he was part of the generation that helped give structure, voice and professional identity to Nigeria’s rapidly expanding online media space. He believed in the possibilities of journalism and committed himself to its continuing evolution.”

For Ogundipe, his personal encounters with Oladipo in recent years, although not frequent, were significant and intellectually rewarding.

“My encounters with Dotun in recent times were not frequent, but they were meaningful,” he recalled.

“They often opened into thoughtful exchanges on journalism, public affairs and the changing character of our profession. I found in him an informed mind, a measured temperament and a professional who had accumulated the wisdom that comes from many years in the trenches.”

The suddenness of Oladipo’s death, Ogundipe observed, inevitably raises the profound questions that mortality places before the living.

“And so, his sudden departure leaves one asking the questions that death habitually provokes, questions for which the living rarely receive answers,” he said.

Yet, even in grief, Ogundipe found reason to reflect on gratitude and the significance of the life Oladipo lived.

“The Scriptures teach us to give thanks in all circumstances. In grief, that instruction becomes difficult but also profound. We give thanks for the life Dotun lived, for the work he accomplished, for the institution he built and for the professional footprint he leaves behind. We mourn the man, but we must also acknowledge the gift his life represented.”

The former NUJ and AUJ President also acknowledged the profound pain now confronting Oladipo’s family, praying that his wife, children and loved ones would find the strength to endure the sudden loss.

“For his family, the pain is immeasurably greater. May the Almighty give his wife, children and loved ones the strength to endure this sudden rupture and the grace to preserve the best of his memory.”

Ogundipe who is also the Chairman of Advisory Council of ValidViewNetwork then turned to a profound Yoruba expression which, in his tribute, became a fitting metaphor for the journalist’s departure and the legacy he leaves behind.

“The Yoruba have a beautiful way of describing such a departure:

‘Ìyẹ̀ la máa wò, àọ̀rì ẹyẹ rì mọ.’

The bird has gone, but its feather remains for us to admire.”

For Ogundipe, those words perfectly capture the enduring significance of Oladipo’s life and work.

“Dotun has flown. His work remains. His memories remain. His contribution to journalism remains.”

He concluded his tribute simply but poignantly:

“May his soul rest in peace.”
