NC Doctor Arrested in I-77 Road Rage Shooting

​CARROLL COUNTY, Va. — A morning commute along Interstate 77 turned into a scene of terror last Saturday, August 22, when a North Carolina physician allegedly opened fire on a moving vehicle, wounding two sisters aged 12 and 20.

​Dr. Richard Thomas Arriviello, a 61-year-old urgent care clinic owner from Charlotte, is behind bars facing multiple felony charges following the violent interstate confrontation.

​According to Virginia State Police, the incident erupted at approximately 8:50 a.m. just three miles north of the North Carolina-Virginia state line. Arriviello, driving a Mercedes-Benz northbound, reportedly pulled alongside a Jeep and discharged a firearm directly into the vehicle.

​The gunfire struck both occupants—sisters aged 12 and 20—in the legs. Emergency responders airlifted both victims to a nearby hospital. Authorities confirmed that their injuries were non-life-threatening and that they remain in stable condition.

​After allegedly fleeing the scene, Arriviello was tracked down by troopers roughly 15 miles north of the shooting site. Police executed a traffic stop near Exit 19 in Carroll County, taking him into custody without further incident.

​State medical records show that Arriviello has been a licensed physician in North Carolina since 2010 and operates Family Urgent Care in Monroe. Investigators have not yet disclosed what specific catalyst sparked the road rage dispute, nor have they confirmed if the firearm used in the attack was recovered from his vehicle.

​Arriviello has been charged with four major felonies, including malicious shooting into an occupied vehicle, shooting from a vehicle, malicious wounding with intent to maim, and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He is currently being held without bond at the New River Valley Regional Jail and is scheduled to face a judge in court on September 29.

​Intriguingly, state troopers also cited the unidentified driver of the Jeep with reckless driving, though law enforcement has not clarified how that citation intersects with the ongoing investigation into the shooting. Virginia State Police are urging anyone with dashcam footage or additional information regarding the morning altercation to contact local authorities as the review continues.
