Ghanaian authorities announced a sweeping anti-narcotics operation that has led to the seizure of more than $1 million in cash, roughly 19 kilograms of gold, and dozens of assets suspected to be linked to drug trafficking and money laundering.

Officials say investigators recocovered approximately $625,000 in one tranche and an additional $440,000 in related cash seizures. Law enforcement teams also traced 73 assets — including properties and vehicles — believed to have been purchased with proceeds from illegal drug sales. The operation has produced 217 arrests and 165 prosecutions to date.

The campaign, which covers the period between January 2025 and July 2026, has seen security agencies seize over 8,500 kilograms of illegal narcotics and about 45.4 million Tramadol tablets, authorities disclosed. The seizures mark one of the most significant enforcement drives against the drug trade in recent Ghanaian history, officials said.

Money-laundering investigations formed a central pillar of the crackdown. Investigators used financial intelligence and asset-tracing techniques to identify suspected proceeds of crime, leading to the recovery of cash and the confiscation of properties. Among the seized valuables was nearly 19 kilograms of gold, which officials suspect was accumulated through narcotics profits and smuggling networks.

The administration has framed the operation as part of a broader strategy to dismantle not only gangs that traffic narcotics but also the financial structures that enable their activities. “We are targeting the drug dealers and the money behind them,” an official statement read, emphasizing the importance of hitting criminal enterprises where they launder and hide proceeds.

Enforcement agencies said the combined seizures and arrests are intended to deter both supply networks and the local demand that fuels them, including the illicit circulation of trafficked pharmaceuticals such as Tramadol.

Prosecutors have initiated 165 cases tied to the operation; more charges are expected as investigations continue. Authorities indicated that asset-recovery measures will be pursued through the courts, and recovered funds and property could be forfeited to the state upon conviction.

Ghana has in recent years faced growing challenges from organized criminal groups involved in the transnational drug trade, regional trafficking routes, and the illicit distribution of controlled pharmaceuticals. Large-scale seizures of synthetic opioids and pharmaceutical preparations have raised concerns about public health and criminal networks’ reach into legitimate commercial systems.

Experts say pursuing money-laundering trails is crucial: removing financial incentives and freezing assets makes it harder for criminal groups to operate, invest, and corrupt officials or communities. Still, analysts note successful long-term disruption also requires coordinated regional cooperation, stronger prosecutions, witness protection, and programs to reduce local drug demand.

Public releases have not yet listed the identities of those arrested, the specific types of assets among the 73 traced (beyond gold), or whether any high-profile suspects have been indicted. Details on how the gold was stored or moved, and whether cross-border links have been established with other criminal networks, were not disclosed in the initial statements.
