An early morning fire outbreak has devastated nearly 300 shops at the popular Oranya Market located within the Ibadan North-East Local Government Area of Oyo State.
According to eyewitness accounts and traders at the scene, the inferno began around midnight, rapidly sweeping through retail sections. The catastrophe heavily impacted business owners dealing in gold, furniture, and second-hand clothing, leaving properties and goods worth millions of naira reduced to ashes.
The Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Fire Reforms and State Chairman of Fire Services, Morof Akinwande, confirmed the incident to our reporter.He noted that preliminary indications suggest the fire originated from an explosion in the middle of the market before spreading. State fire services successfully brought the situation under control by 1 am, while official post-fire investigations are underway to ascertain the exact number of destroyed structures and total inventory loss.
This unfortunate event follows a recent fire on Saturday, August 22, 2026, which destroyed nine locked-up shops and interior decoration goods worth millions at the Nigerian Railway shopping complex near Aleshinloye Market in Ibadan South-West Local Government Area. A prior major fire had also razed over 200 shops in the herbal section of Oranya Market in 2024.
