LAS VEGAS.

Almost thirty years after a white Cadillac pulled up beside a black BMW on the Las Vegas Strip, someone is finally standing trial for what happened next.

Jury selection began Monday, August 10, 2026, in Duane “Keffe D” Davis’s murder trial, ValidViewNetwork reports.

Checks by ValidViewNetwork confirm proceedings are unfolding at Clark County District Court in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Trial Begins

Davis, 63, faces one count of murder with a deadly weapon and a gang enhancement. Findings show the charge alleges he acted with intent to promote a criminal gang.

He has pleaded not guilty since his arrest in September 2023. The trial is expected to run roughly a month, ValidViewNetwork gathered.

What Davis Is Accused Of

Prosecutors do not accuse Davis of firing the fatal shots himself. They allege he orchestrated the drive-by shooting and supplied the weapon used.

A .40-caliber Glock passed through his hands before reaching the shooter, prosecutors say. Davis faces life in prison without parole if convicted at trial.

The Night Tupac Died

Tupac Shakur was shot on September 7, 1996, near the Las Vegas Strip. He sat in the passenger seat of Death Row Records co-founder Suge Knight’s BMW.

The pair had just watched a Mike Tyson fight and were heading to a nightclub. A white Cadillac pulled alongside them at a red light. Gunfire erupted, striking Shakur four times across his chest, arm, and thigh.

He died six days later, on September 13, 1996, at age 25.

A Confession Written For A Book

Davis detailed his role in a 2019 memoir titled “Compton Street Legend.” Prosecutors are relying heavily on those written admissions to build their case, ValidViewNetwork reports.

Davis now claims the book exaggerated his involvement to boost sales. “I’ve never read the book,” Davis said, blaming his co-author for inserting false details.

Former Clark County prosecutor David Roger said the trial’s outcome depends heavily on the book’s credibility. “It really is going to revolve around truthful and untruthful statements,” Roger said.

Nearly three decades of fading memory among witnesses could complicate the prosecution’s case further.

The Diddy Connection

Davis’s book alleges Sean “Diddy” Combs offered him money to kill Knight and Shakur. The claim ties into a real rivalry between Death Row Records and Bad Boy Records in the 1990s.

Combs has consistently denied any involvement in Shakur’s killing. ValidViewNetwork gathered that Combs is not listed as a witness in the trial.

His representatives have not responded to requests for comment on testifying.

Tupac In Poetic Justice: More Than A Rapper

Long before his death, Shakur had already crossed from music into film. He starred opposite Janet Jackson in John Singleton’s 1993 drama “Poetic Justice.”

The film followed grief, love, and everyday Black life across a road trip through California. Shakur played Lucky, a postal worker balancing fatherhood with dreams of rap stardom.

Critics noted the role revealed a tenderness rarely associated with his hip-hop persona. The performance helped cement Shakur as a rare dual threat; rapper and genuine screen actor.

A Voice For Black America

Shakur’s music carried the weight of communities often ignored by mainstream media. Songs addressing single motherhood, poverty, and police violence sat alongside anthems of defiance and pride.

His mother, Afeni Shakur, had been a member of the Black Panther Party. That lineage shaped a public persona built on contradiction: vulnerability wrapped inside a “Thug Life” exterior.

For many listeners, Shakur articulated pain and resilience in language rarely offered a national stage.

Legacy That Outlived The Bullet

Shakur’s influence only grew after his death, reshaping how hip-hop remembered its icons.

A posthumous hologram performance at Coachella in 2012 introduced him to a new generation.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted him in 2017, decades after his passing. His poetry collection, “The Rose That Grew from Concrete,” remains a staple in classrooms and libraries.

Few artists have shaped both a genre and a generation’s sense of identity so completely.

Nearly thirty years is a long time for any case to wait for daylight. What finally arrives in a Las Vegas courtroom cannot undo the loss hip-hop suffered in 1996.

But it can, for the first time, put a name to accountability rather than speculation. Whatever the verdict, Shakur’s voice already outlasted the silence surrounding his death.
