Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has demanded that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) disclose the names of the firms printing ballot papers for the 2027 general elections.
The Atiku INEC ballot papers printing demand is the latest in a series of calls for transparency in the electoral process.
THE DEMAND
Atiku, the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate in 2023 and a likely contender in 2027, said Nigerians deserve to know who is producing the ballot papers and under what conditions.
He argued that transparency in the procurement of electoral materials is essential to public confidence in the process.
THE CONTEXT
Ballot paper printing is one of the most sensitive aspects of election administration. The integrity of the ballot is foundational to the credibility of the outcome.
If ballot papers can be compromised, through extra printing, diversion, or manipulation, the entire election is at risk.
The previous general election cycle saw disputes over the procurement of electoral materials, including allegations of irregularities in the award of contracts.
THE BROADER CALL FOR REFORM
Atiku’s demand is part of a broader push for electoral reform in Nigeria. Opposition parties and civil society groups have called for greater transparency in INEC’s operations, including procurement, logistics, result transmission and collation.
INEC has previously said it follows due process in its procurement and that its processes are subject to oversight.
WHY IT MATTERS
Election integrity depends on trust. If voters believe the process is rigged, they may disengage. If they believe it is fair, they may participate.
Atiku’s demand is an attempt to force INEC to demonstrate that the 2027 ballot will be produced under conditions that can withstand scrutiny. ValidViewNetwork reports that INEC has not yet responded to Atiku’s demand.
