MANCHESTER — More than six years after a chaotic lockdown party descended into fatal gunfire, international law enforcement cooperation has yielded a critical breakthrough. A 36-year-old suspect has been extradited from Turkey to the United Kingdom and placed under arrest on suspicion of murder, marking a monumental shift in the cold case.
The high-profile extradition stems from the tragic events of June 21, 2020, when a spontaneous gathering of roughly 300 to 400 people spilled into a car park off Caythorpe Street in the Moss Side district of Manchester. The midnight event, unfolding in the wake of local Black Lives Matter demonstrations and strict pandemic restrictions, turned bloody following an escalating dispute.
Gunfire erupted, claiming the lives of 21-year-old Cheriff Tall and Nigerian father-of-three Abayomi ‘Junior’ Ajose, 36. According to investigators, Tall was targeted first, and Ajose was gunned down roughly 20 seconds later after stepping forward as a Good Samaritan to intervene.
The suspect was detained abroad before being flown back to England, touching down at Stansted Airport where Greater Manchester Police (GMP) officers were waiting to take him into custody.
Detective Chief Inspector Neil Higginson of GMP’s Major Incident Team hailed the development as a testament to years of relentless investigative work.
”Over the last six years, myself and my officers have been carrying out multiple warrants, analysing evidence, examining devices that have been seized during the investigation, and pursuing every opportunity to identify those responsible,” Higginson stated. “This arrest demonstrates our unwavering commitment to securing justice for Junior and Cheriff and their loved ones.”
Despite the passage of time and the landmark extradition, authorities emphasize that the investigation remains active. Detectives believe that a large pool of eyewitnesses who populated the car park that night still possess vital information that could secure a conviction.
A substantial £50,000 reward remains active for anyone who steps forward with crucial details leading to the identification and conviction of all individuals involved in the killings. Anyone with information is urged to contact Greater Manchester Police or reach out anonymously through independent crime-fighting organizations.
