The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has announced that the newly introduced N66-per-litre fuel price discount can only be accessed through its official mobile application.
The policy has drawn mixed reactions from citizens and transport operators, who have questioned the accessibility of a public relief measure tied strictly to digital platforms.
Understanding the Discount Initiative
The relief framework initially rolled out as a limited Independence Anniversary promotion offering a N66 reduction per litre. Following a federal government announcement regarding a broader 30-day intervention to cushion rising transportation costs, NNPCL extended the promotional window through October 31, 2026.
According to the state-owned oil firm, motorists must download the NNPC Fuel App, complete their registration, and process their payments digitally at participating retail outlets to qualify for the slashed rate.
Justification and Public Concerns
Defending the digital-only requirement, NNPCL’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh, explained that restricting the discount to the mobile platform is necessary to maintain operational control, prevent systemic abuse, and ensure that relief reaches genuine consumers. He noted that the strategy also aims to drive wider technological adoption and enhance overall customer experience at retail stations.
However, the mechanism has faced pushback from various transport operators and motorists. Critics argue that a broad economic palliative should not exclude citizens who lack compatible smartphones, reliable internet data, or digital literacy skills required to navigate app-based payment systems.
Despite these concerns, NNPCL maintains that the initiative—funded through retail margins rather than a return of the federal subsidy regime—remains fully active across its nationwide stations for users who complete transactions via the application.
