The family of former Ogun State Governor and Senator representing Ogun East, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, is in mourning following the passing of their matriarch, Chief Sabainah Ibironke Opawole. She died on Thursday, July 2, 2026, at the age of 93, following a brief illness.
Chief Opawole was the mother of Yeye Olufunke Daniel, the former First Lady of Ogun State. Her death was confirmed in a statement issued on Sunday by Steve Oliyide, media aide to Senator Gbenga Daniel.
Born on April 23, 1933, the late matriarch hailed from a distinguished lineage. She was the daughter of Princess Mariam Ladigbolu of the esteemed Ladigbolu royal family of the Oyo Kingdom and the late Rev. O. Osoba of Olodo Village, Abeokuta.
Reflecting on her life, the family described Chief Opawole as a devoted Christian of the Baptist faith whose life was defined by unwavering devotion, strength, and strong moral values.
“Her life stood as a quiet testament to devotion, family, and enduring values,” the statement noted. “She lived a long and graceful life anchored in faith.”
The announcement of her passing has triggered a wave of sympathy and condolences from associates, political figures, and community leaders across Ogun State and beyond. The family indicated that funeral arrangements will be communicated to the public in the near future and has requested prayers for the family during this period of bereavement.
She is survived by children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, including the former First Lady, Yeye Olufunke Daniel, who remains a prominent figure in the state’s public and social spheres.
