A former G4S security guard who used an outdated uniform to orchestrate a brazen £117,000 theft from a London bank has been sentenced to three years and four months in prison.
Kwabena Kissi, 40, executed the fraud on July 5, 2022, at a Santander branch in Brixton, south London. Exploiting his “inside knowledge” of company procedures, Kissi entered the facility wearing a helmet with the visor down and a face mask, disguised in a G4S uniform he had failed to return after resigning from the security firm two years earlier.
During the heist, Kissi convinced bank staff that he was there for a scheduled collection, even telling a suspicious employee that he was working a “new route.” Trusting his appearance and standard-issue equipment, staff handed over bags containing £117,200 in cash. The deception was only discovered when the genuine G4S courier arrived shortly afterward, prompting an immediate investigation.
The following day, Kissi fled to Accra, Ghana, where he remained for nearly four years. His attempt to evade justice ultimately collapsed upon his return to the UK on March 26. Police had linked him to the crime through the Uber he used as a getaway vehicle—Kissi had made the critical oversight of booking the ride using his own name and personal phone number.
At his sentencing at Snaresbrook Crown Court, Judge Rosa Dean dismissed claims that the flight to Ghana was motivated by a desire to care for an ailing mother, characterizing the trip instead as a calculated effort to escape detection. She also noted the emotional toll on bank staff, emphasizing that the employees involved were not subject to disciplinary action despite the significant loss.
Officers from the Metropolitan Police intercepted Kissi at Gatwick Airport upon his return. When apprehended, he was found in possession of the very same mobile phone handset used to coordinate his escape from the scene in 2022.
