BINDURA — A 32-year-old man from a local farming community has been sentenced to 12 months in prison following a horrific act of domestic violence that left his 42-year-old wife with severe injuries.
The assailant, whose identity is being withheld to protect the privacy of the survivor, appeared before the Bindura Magistrates’ Court this week. He pleaded guilty to charges of physical abuse in violation of Zimbabwe’s Domestic Violence Act.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), the incident occurred on the evening of June 21, 2026, amidst a heated domestic dispute. Prosecutors detailed a disturbing sequence of events in which the man allegedly initiated a pretense of intimacy to lure his wife. Once he had gained her proximity, he seized her and used a razor blade to inflict a deep, agonizing wound to her genital area.
The attack resulted in significant blood loss. In a chilling detail shared by prosecutors, the accused reportedly offered the victim water to clean herself immediately following the assault, rather than seeking urgent medical intervention.
In its sentencing, the court condemned the brutality of the act. While the magistrate initially handed down an 18-month prison term, six months were suspended for a period of five years, contingent on the offender’s good behavior. The remaining 12-month sentence is to be served effectively.
This case serves as a somber reminder of the ongoing challenges regarding gender-based violence (GBV) in Zimbabwe. Despite the robust legal framework provided by the Domestic Violence Act [Chapter 5:16]—which explicitly criminalizes physical, sexual, and psychological abuse—activists and legal experts continue to highlight the gap between legislation and the lived realities of victims.
The NPAZ reaffirmed its commitment to the vigorous prosecution of domestic abusers, emphasizing that the justice system will continue to prioritize the protection of victims and ensure that perpetrators face the full weight of the law for their actions.
If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, please contact local law enforcement or seek assistance from registered victim-friendly units and gender-based violence support organizations operating in your province.
