NORTH LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A somber investigation is unfolding in Broward County following the death of a 62-year-old military veteran who was fatally shot during an argument over a parking space at a local Walmart on Tuesday.
The victim has been identified as Bart Diguglielmo, a resident of Lauderhill and a native of Hammonton, New Jersey. According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO), the incident occurred just before 12:30 p.m. outside the Walmart Supercenter located at 7900 W. McNab Road.
Deputies arrived at the scene to find Diguglielmo suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite being rushed to Broward Health Medical Center by emergency responders, he was later pronounced dead.
The woman involved in the dispute, whose identity has not yet been released by authorities, remained at the scene following the shooting. She has been cooperating with investigators and maintains that she fired in self-defense. Detectives have confirmed that the woman was detained for questioning as part of the ongoing inquiry.
Footage of the confrontation, which has circulated on social media, shows the two individuals engaged in a heated verbal exchange. In the recording, the woman is seen holding a firearm as she and Diguglielmo trade words. The encounter escalated until a single gunshot was heard, and Diguglielmo collapsed.
As the investigation continues, the victim’s family is grappling with the sudden loss. Diguglielmo’s daughter, who identified herself as Amanda, spoke publicly to refute accounts suggesting the altercation involved physical advances. She described her father as a “good man” and a veteran who did not deserve to lose his life over a parking dispute.
Family members shared that Diguglielmo was a retired nurse with 30 years of experience in the medical field. His sister noted that he was a decorated veteran who served as a combat medic and tactical communications expert during Operation Desert Storm. She remembered him as a peaceful, devout Christian man.
The BSO homicide unit is currently piecing together the events that led to the shooting. Once the initial inquiry concludes, the case will be handed over to the Broward County State Attorney’s Office, which will review the evidence and the shooter’s self-defense claim to determine whether formal criminal charges are warranted.
