SAINT PETERSBURG — Ukrainian long-range drones struck critical energy and military infrastructure in Saint Petersburg on Wednesday, directly disrupting the opening of Russia’s premier economic summit.
The strikes hit the Saint Petersburg Oil Terminal and the Kronstadt military base, sending thick plumes of black smoke into the skyline—highly visible from the convention center hosting the Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF). The high-profile gathering, historically dubbed “Russia’s Davos,” is a flagship event for President Vladimir Putin, who is scheduled to address attendees on Friday.
Targeting the Kremlin’s Showpiece
Local authorities, including regional governor Alexander Beglov, confirmed that “several” facilities on the city’s outskirts sustained damage, though no casualties were reported. Russian officials had reportedly sent urgent text alerts to residents and forum visitors warning of potential aerial threats shortly before the automated air defense systems were engaged.
In Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy hailed the operation as a success for the country’s domestic drone program, framing the strikes as “long-range sanctions” designed to hit the economic engine fueling Russia’s war effort.
”Ukraine’s plan for long-range sanctions is being implemented exactly as needed to bring peace closer,” Zelenskyy stated, alongside verified social media footage of a large oil depot engulfed in flames.
A Bold Shift in Geometry
The strike represents a significant tactical escalation, bringing the realities of the front line directly to Russia’s westerly second city, located over 850 miles (1,300 kilometers) from Ukrainian territory.
Ukrainian defense officials made no secret of the timing, explicitly aiming to embarrass the Kremlin as it attempts to project economic stability to foreign delegates, including members of Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.
”The Petersburg forum is opening with a nice plume of black smoke in the background,” noted Sergiy Sternenko, an adviser to the Ukrainian Defense Ministry.
Geopolitical Ripples
The psychological blow to Moscow comes at a highly charged geopolitical moment. The strikes coincided with a high-level diplomatic visit to Kyiv by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who arrived alongside an assembly of alliance ambassadors to reinforce Western military support.
As clean-up operations continue amid heightened security across Saint Petersburg, the attacks underscore Kyiv’s growing capability to pierce deep into Russian airspace, turning what was meant to be a showcase of Russian resilience into a vivid demonstration of the conflict’s expanding reach.
