SAGAMU – The Executive Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, has approved the reappointment of Dr. (Mrs.) Oluwabunmi Motunrayo Fatungase as the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu, for a fresh four-year tenure.
The renewal follows an official recommendation by the OOUTH Board of Management, led by the distinguished Dr. (Chief) Kunle Hassan. The Board described the extension as a resounding validation of Dr. Fatungase’s visionary leadership, profound professional humility, and transformative contributions to the state-owned tertiary health institution.
A Legacy of Institutional Growth
First appointed to the substantive role in May 2022 after piloting the institution in an acting capacity from April 2021, Dr. Fatungase made history as the first female Chief Medical Director of OOUTH. Her initial tenure was defined by a massive infrastructural overhaul, heavy investment in modern medical equipment, and an aggressive expansion of clinical services.
Under her administration’s mid-year fiscal stewardship, OOUTH generated over ₦2.9 billion in revenue and facilitated critical infrastructure injections, including the commissioning of a ultra-modern ₦1.6 billion Trauma Centre. Her tenure also prioritized workforce development, significantly increasing manpower training across diverse medical and surgical specialties, and strengthening the hospital’s position as a premier healthcare hub in southwest Nigeria.
Medical Excellence and Academic Pedigree
Dr. Fatungase brings over 28 years of clinical medical experience into her second term. An alumnus of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, she is an acclaimed Consultant Anesthetist with a sub-specialized clinical interest in Paediatric Anesthesia and Regional Techniques.
Before rising to lead the institution, she served as the Head of the Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care at both OOUTH and the Obafemi Awolowo College of Health Sciences, Ikenne. She was also the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC) from January 2019 to 2022. Professionally, Dr. Fatungase is a Fellow of both the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and the West African College of Surgeons, and is a past President of the Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Ogun State Chapter.
Charting the Path Forward
With this fresh mandate, the hospital administration aims to accelerate its trajectory toward global competitiveness. The management team has called for continued, robust collaboration from the Ogun State Government, the governing board, alumni networks, staff, and international development partners.
The next four years are expected to heavily focus on expanding medical research, incorporating advanced digital health technologies, and sustaining high-quality, accessible patient care to consolidate OOUTH’s standing as a leading center of innovation and medical excellence.
