MAIDUGURI, NIGERIA — In a major blow to violent extremism in the North-East, a coordinated air operation by the Nigerian military and the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) has neutralized 21 fighters belonging to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in Borno State.
The precision strike, executed under the auspices of Operation HADIN KAI, targeted a strategic insurgent stronghold in Arege, located within the Kukawa Local Government Area.
Intelligence-Led Precision Strike
According to security sources and counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama, the operation was launched following intense Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions. Surveillance tracking confirmed a heavy concentration of ISWAP fighters assembling at the camp, where they were reportedly finalizing logistical plans for fresh attacks across the wider Lake Chad Basin region.
With the coordinates locked, high-precision aerial bombardments were deployed against the location. Military sources confirmed that the offensive completely destroyed the terrorist infrastructure, dismantled their operational capabilities, and left 21 insurgents dead.
”The precision engagement resulted in the elimination of 21 terrorists and caused significant disruption to the operational capabilities of the criminal elements,” a security source noted.
Sustained Pressure on the Lake Chad Axis
This operation is part of an ongoing, aggressively ramped-up joint military intervention between Abuja and Washington aimed at entirely dismantling the jihadist architecture in Nigeria’s northeast region. It comes just weeks after a series of initial joint raids and air strikes in Metele, Borno State, which neutralized over 20 fighters and successfully eliminated a top ISWAP global commander, Abu-Bilal al-Minuki (also known as Abakar Minuki).
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has maintained that these consecutive blows are severely fracturing the leadership and recruitment structures of both ISWAP and Boko Haram. Observers note that while the foreign-backed insurgent groups have tried to enforce stricter operational security—even executing their own members to prevent digital tracking—the superior aerial reconnaissance and shared intelligence from the US-Nigeria alliance continue to expose their hideouts.
Securing the Frontier
Defense analysts view this successful mission as an endorsement of the revitalized security pact between Nigeria and its international allies. Beyond the immediate casualties inflicted on the insurgents, the destruction of the Arege camp denies ISWAP a critical launchpad for cross-border raids into neighboring Cameroon, Chad, and Niger.
While defense officials are optimistic that the strike will severely suppress insurgent movements in the short term, ground forces remain on high alert. Combined clearance operations are ongoing across the Lake Chad Basin to ensure remnants of the fractured terror cells cannot regroup or target vulnerable civilian populations along the border corridors.
