Police Nab Two ‘One-Chance’ Robbers in Abeokuta, Rescue Suspects From Angry Mob

​ABEOKUTA – Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have apprehended two suspected “one-chance” robbers who allegedly targeted and dispossessed three sisters of their valuables in the Obantoko area of Abeokuta.

​The prompt intervention of law enforcement also saved the suspects from being lynched by an angry mob that gathered at the scene of the crime.

​The suspects, identified as Odulate Kehinde and Olajide Rasak, were arrested on Thursday, May 28, 2026, by detectives attached to the Obantoko Division, following a distress call from members of the public.

​Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the Ogun State Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, stated that the incident occurred at around 5:15 p.m.

​According to the police spokesperson, the three victims had attended a wedding anniversary in the Somorin area and boarded a Nissan Micra taxi painted in Ogun State commercial colours, heading toward NNPC Kuto, where they intended to board a vehicle to Lagos.

​However, the journey took a dangerous turn when the driver and other occupants of the vehicle diverted from the agreed route around the OLG Somorin axis. The suspects reportedly turned violent, terrorized the female passengers, and forcefully ejected them from the moving vehicle.

​Immediately after being thrown out, the primary complainant discovered that her iPhone 12 Pro had been stolen and raised an alarm, attracting nearby residents and passersby.

​”Upon receiving the distress alert, operatives of the Obantoko Division, in collaboration with vigilant members of the public, swiftly mobilized to the scene,” DSP Babaseyi said. “The timely intervention of the police prevented a possible mob action by agitated members of the public who had already surrounded the suspects.”

​While Kehinde and Rasak were pinned down and arrested at the scene, the operational Nissan Micra vehicle managed to speed away from the area.

​During preliminary interrogation, the suspects voluntarily confessed to being part of a syndicate specializing in “one-chance” commercial vehicle robberies. The police recovered the stolen iPhone 12 Pro, alongside several other mobile phones suspected to have been stolen from previous victims.

​The PPRO noted that photographs of the suspects were documented for record purposes, and the recovered iPhone has since been released to its rightful owner on bond. The suspects remain in custody as police intensify efforts to track down the fleeing driver and recover the operational vehicle.

​The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, commended the Obantoko division operatives for their swift, professional response and thanked the public for working with law enforcement to prevent a breakdown of law and order. He reiterated the command’s stance on intelligence-led policing and zero tolerance for jungle justice.
