ODUKPANI— A chilling wave of horror has swept through the quiet locality of Creektown in Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State, following the dramatic arrest of a suspected serial killer, identified simply as Akaninyene.
The suspect, who has allegedly confessed to the gruesome murder of at least 30 people, was apprehended after security forces uncovered a network of shallow mass graves hidden deep within a local forest.
The Breakthrough and Dramatic Arrest
The operational breakthrough followed a coordinated intelligence-gathering effort by military personnel and a tactical special forces squad. Acting on a precise tip-off, security operatives—guided by local youths and community elders—tracked the suspect to a secluded, self-built hut buried deep within the forest of Abanyama, located in the Ukim Ita Community of Creektown.
Upon realizing his hideout had been compromised, Akaninyene reportedly bolted into his hut to retrieve a weapon. However, he was quickly outmaneuvered and surrounded by the tactical team. A desperate attempt to flee into the dense canopy of the forest was thwarted as operatives intercepted and subdued him.
A Macabre Discovery Beneath the Plantains
A subsequent search of the secluded compound exposed a sickening crime scene. Investigators discovered eight shallow graves scattered around the hideout. To the horror of the search party, each grave contained the headless remains of roughly five victims.
In a calculated bid to evade detection and mask the stench of decomposition, the suspect had planted plantain crops directly over the burial sites. The advanced state of decomposition of several remains strongly indicates that the slaughter had been systematically carried out over a prolonged period.
During a preliminary interrogation, Akaninyene allegedly confessed to the murder of approximately 30 community members who had mysteriously vanished without a trace over recent months. He was subsequently forced to lead investigators back to the sites to oversee the exhumation of the headless corpses.
The Final Victim and the Accomplice
According to intelligence sources, the suspect’s murderous streak came to an end following his final hit on Tuesday, May 26, 2026. Unlike previous operations, the final attack triggered alarm bells after residents on the outskirts of the community overheard muffled cries and signs of a violent struggle emanating from the forest edge.
Akaninyene has reportedly implicated an unnamed female accomplice, who he claims acted as a “decoy.” According to his confession, the woman’s primary role was to lure unsuspecting victims into the forest hideout and physically restrain them—specifically holding down their heads—while he executed the killings.

The gruesome revelations have sent shockwaves across Cross River State, leaving families of missing persons grappling with the grim reality that a predator was living in their midst.
The successful operation was the result of swift administrative and security mobilization. Following reports of the struggle from residents, the Councilor representing Creektown Ward 1, Apostle Hon. Ene Itam, alongside the Ward Chairman and local leaders, formally briefed the Executive Chairman of Odukpani LGA, Rt. Hon. Elder Chief Ukpong Etim Asido. Security forces were immediately embedded into the area, supported by the Leader of the 8th Legislative Assembly in Odukpani LGA, Hon. Effiom Ekene, and Hon. Emmanuel of the Adibo Efut Ward.
In the wake of the arrest, angry yet resilient community youths have launched aggressive “bush-combing” exercises across the Odukpani forests to ensure no other hidden graves or accomplice camps remain.
Ongoing Investigations
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Cross River State Command, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, stated that the suspect remains in custody. He assured the public that a comprehensive official statement would be issued as forensic examinations of the exhumed bodies progress.
Security agencies believe that Akaninyene’s confessions will provide critical leads to dismantling a wider criminal network involved in ritual killings and organ trafficking within the region. Authorities have strongly urged residents of Cross River State to maintain high vigilance and report any irregular activities in forested areas immediately.
